I EYE

SPOTTED: SCARLETT J, the svelte sexy Swedish-descent screen seductress, on June 17, again on a weekend, again at Westwood's Rite-Aid store! (see previous Hasselhoof buzz below). S.J. walked into the store, happily hand in hand with a tall dark-haired young man - even continued to hold hands once they were in the front door. They seemed tight. She was smiling, looking hot as always. So, first Hasselhoff and now Ms. Golden Globes, at Rite Aid in Westwood Village; is this a trend, coincidence, or one of those Jungian synchronicities Sting sang about two decades ago? You decide. (I have to remember to carry my camera more.)

CHATTED: with AL GORE, former Veep under B.J. Clinton (those really are his initials, by the way, Bill Jefferson Clinton, so don't go spamming me) - Al was very friendly talking with guests at a fine shindig thrown June 13 at Mitchell Gold furniture store on trendy 3rd Street near Fairfax, in honor of Al's wife TIPPER GORE and her photos (she being a photojournalist now, and her pix are indeed stellar - a couple dancing in a far off land, Clinton with Rabin and Arafat, animal shots, and more). So what did I talk to Al about? I asked him what the most surprising thing was about being on Saturday Night Live (since I told him I loved his performances on the show - especially his recent stint giving a Presidential White House speech from an alternate parallel-Earth where he won in 2000 and the surplus has now shrunk to a measly few billion - remember?) - anyway, Al told me the biggest surprise was that SNL shoots TWO SHOWS each Saturday --- one early eve, for TWO HOURS, after which all cram into Exec Prod LORNE MICHAELS' office to decide what worked and what didnt, and THEN at 1130 the final live shorter 90-min show is performed. (I wonder if Al said he's not running for Prez in 08 because he is gonna be in the SNL cast come this fall.... just a thought.) Al also generously credited his comedy-writing daughter for the skits he was in. Great guy, Mr. Gore -- much taller than I imagined, firm thick handshake, very relaxed yet sure of himself, I liked his vibe. Between you and I, I think he is playing poker with the people, perhaps planning a run in 08 after all, after all of us realize the other options ain't so great. A few more hurricanes and gas at 8 bucks a gallon, and Gore's environmental message should easily sweep him into the White House, much as another Veep-who-lost-close-election-only-to-win-8-years-later (Nixon) did in 1968. Things go in 40 year cycles, right? Go get 'em, Gore.

SPOTTED: During Cinco de Mayo weekend, I eyed David Hasselhoff coming out of Rite Aid in Westwood; a fine establishment, and a fine actor. If this were Germany, he would have been mobbed, I'm sure - or so Norm McDonald would have you believe. But in good ole LA, he just blent right in (did I make up a word here? not sure). Amazing how this fame thing works, isn't it -- the man has starred in some extremely successful shows... Baywatch was like, what, the top show in the world for a while, perhaps still is... and yet the man blent in like he was Yakov Smirnoff or something. Maybe it was the cool shades David was wearing? Not sure. But shades are a celeb's best friend, next to Dr. 90210. Of course, David certainly doesn't need any work done, and I assume he's never had any done, but many other celebs could certainly use some, to undo the work done that done went wrong. If you follow. So, what was in the handy white bag the former Knight Rider's hand was carrying? Perhaps some Rite Aid brand products (a great value), perhaps some Hasselhoff tunes on CD. Don't know. I can only report what I see. (--Dr. Peeper)

ACQUIRED:  Free comics on May 6th, from Kevin Smith's most excellent Westwood Boulevard store, Secret Stash. They had plenty of colorful comics to give away, on this special "Free Comic Book Day" that comes but once a year (kinda like Christmas... yet different). Highlights of the handouts: a Simpsons comic (featuring, of course, Comic Book Guy)... a great comic that teaches you how to create comics... an issue of Steve Forbes, Flattaxman (okay, I made that up)... a Justice League issue... and a Superman/Batman free edition. What, no Action Comics Issue 1?
FYI, Secret Stash is one cool place. Not only can you play free videogames on their machine in the corner (the classics, like Dig Dug, which I dig), but you can often spot Kevin himself in the store. Once I did just that, a few months back; for his entire 5 minute visit, he was on his cell whilst signing assorted store merch. What was he talking about? And to whom? Don't know. I can only report what I hear. (--Dr. Peeper)
