Welcome to the future of the automobile...

ZAP to it!

Remember the Dymaxion car? Okay, maybe you're not 80, but designer-futurist legend Bucky Fuller

made a 3-wheeler back in the day. Way back in the day. Wacky back then. Way cool now. Sometimes

it takes decades for people to decide an idea is ripe, and right.

See the small striped vehicle in the photo? This cute puppy is the Xebra, made by Zap. Under

10 grand, goes up to 50 miles per hour (officially 40 mph, but I rode in one and the driver said

he got it to top 50), range of around 40 miles on one charge.  And get this, it gets power from a

regular old AC outlet! That's right, 100 percent electric, no gas power. Just plug it in!

This three wheeled wonder may become the iPod of autos. If marketed properly, the Xebra could

become wildly popular in places with the highest gas prices -- as well as with students, both for the

savings and for the nature of this car (bare bones in feel, not fancy inside -- and technically not even

a car; its 3 wheel design puts it in the motorcycle category).

Worldchanging Book Tour Event: Equator Books, Venice

(December 2, 2006)  Their website says: "we signed a contract to deliver

a book on worldchanging solutions to the planet's most pressing problems.

...We hope you'll order a copy now (early orders will help encourage more

stores to carry it), but, equally importantly, we hope you'll come join us in

person as we launch a whirlwind 6-week North American tour! ...We'll be

hitting New York, San Francisco, Toronto, L.A., Chicago, Vancouver,

Portland, D.C., The Twin Cities, Austin and Denver (as well as holding an

event here in Seattle). In each place, we'll be giving talks and parties

to celebrate not only the book, but also the local community of people

and organizations who are engaged in worldchanging work. Each event

will also feature brief introductory remarks from people we respect and

admire. The point is to create an avenue for spotlighting and connecting

worldchangers and worldchanging things...and ...to meet one another and have a great time."

Re-Elect Gore - or at least Buy His New Book

The "Re-Elect Gore" signs were on display, as were letters being signed to show support for a Draft Gore movement, at the Writers Bloc event May 22 in Beverly Hills - which featured Harry Shearer ("Not Enough Indians" author, Le Show radio host, Simpsons VO god and yadda yadda yadda his resume is too long!) interviewing the former Veep (Al Gore's new book "The Assault on Reason" is just coming out). Gore and Shearer hung around after the main event, signing books and posing for the occasional photo.

LOHAS

Solar-powered backpacks? Soft robes made from bamboo? Free mini massages and facials? A talk by the visionary head of Stonybrook Farms? Meditation and musings with Lou Reed? A tote bag made from recycled furniture upholstery? It could only be one conference, and that conference is LOHAS.

The 11th installment of this excellent annual confab was held mid-May at the Marriott Marina del Rey. Some highlights (in addition to the above): Purebamboo.com is one site to check out; their robes feel like soft cotton yet are made from a blend featuring bamboo, which I was told has natural anti-microbial properties. The Andrew Weil booth featured some of his books (including "8 Weeks to Optimum Health" and "Healthy Aging"), as well as many of his company's health products. The aforementioned solar backpack lets you power cellphones, mp3 players and other electronics while on the go, all with a spiffy look; it's called the Juice Bag, from Reware (rewarestore.com) and was the Grist.com booth's prize (Grist.com features eco news with humor, and more). Christie Communications, one of our favorite cause-centric PR companies, had a beautiful booth packed with several great products and messages -- including the line of  Steaz teas (love their Organic Raspberry sodas, as well as their Root Beet and Orange - and their new Energy drink), Mr. Krispers baked chips, extremely refreshing organic ice teas by Honest Tea, and several causes involving children - they played a DVD featuring kids promoting fundamental rights in creative ways. Discovery was there spreading the word about their new Green channel launching in 2008 (24/7 programming with Green-themed content). In addition to the above booths, there was the ISPA downstairs with relaxing treatments for all attendees (for face, feet - free), and everyone loved the organic food tastings.

The superb talks included an inspiring presentation by Gary Hirshberg, founder of Stonybrook Farms, who rightly pointed out that the climate change movement can and must achieve the same life-changing life-affirming results in the 21st century that the Anti-Apartheid movement did in the last. There were nighttime parties as well, both at the hotel and offsite (at Steve Glenn's amazing multi-level abode in Santa Monica - he being the CEO of LivingHomes). All in all, this conference just gets bigger and better every year; you owe it to yourself (and your planet) to go next year. More info at www.lohas.com

Which reminds me of a joke I wrote. What do you call a teen screen queen who goes green? Lindsay Lohas.

Einstein's Refrigerator

See the cool story by Gary Goettling. The coolest part: it cools without electricity! Some quick highlights:

It's noiseless, inexpensive and durable. Reinventing the great genius' invention may not be the answer to one of today's environmental problems - but then again, it may be.

Mechanical engineering doctoral candidate Andy Delano [who built one]: "It's basically an absorption-type refrigerator that uses ammonia, water and butane to create a chemical phenomenon that allows you to run the whole thing at a constant pressure, so you don't need moving parts like a pump or a compressor," Delano explains. "It provides cooling with only heat as an input. Literally, you heat one end and the other end gets cold."
